DESIGN & PRODUCTION PORTFOLIO

Here is a sneak peak at a few of beloved creations.

Dark wedding cakes: Pro’s and Con’s

You want a black wedding cake?  Of course you can have one, but do you know the pros vs. cons?  Actually any dark color cake finish can be very elegant and posh.  Here are some we love.

If you have a dark color palette for your wedding, pairing the cake in the same colors can be done.  The chalkboard trend was really big recently, so many weddings had a cake that mimicked the chalkboard style.  We love the pearls on the navy cake and the fondant saree on the maroon cake.  Both have amazing contrast between the light piping accents and pearls on the dark frosting/fondant.

Now for the pros and cons:
PRO’s

  • You can match or partner the dark color with the rest of the décor
  • The contrast between dark and light or metallics is stunning
  • You can get dark colors in fondant, marzipan, or buttercream
  • They are beautiful

CON’s

  • If you have a dark color buttercream, the buttercream bleeds down the knife when you cut the cake and it looks like the actual cake is black, red, navy, etc.
  • Your guests will have the same color lips, teeth, and mouth as the cake. Not so attractive, especially for the bride and groom taking that photo of the cake cutting and feeding each other.
  • If you have kids at the wedding eating cake, it’s going to be a big mess

If you’re scared of the con’s dark color cake presents, consider these alternatives:

  • Make one of the smaller tied of the cake the darkest color
  • Use an ombré cake, keeping the darkest color the smallest coverage
  • Make the flowers or other décor the dark colors. Weather you have sugar flowers or real flowers, they never are plated with a piece of cake
  • Pipe or paint on the design with the dark color.
  • Have your baker make the dark cake or tier a faux one and the real cake other or lighter finishes. Then you can supplement the faux with backup cake.
  • Use dark colors with ribbon applications.
  • Get a naked cake. Naked cakes are un-frosted cakes.  Red velvet or chocolate naked cakes are good options to have vs. red or brown frosting/finishes.

Here are some dark color alternative cakes that we love, using the above suggestions.

One last note to you Brides: Don’t let your photographer take a photo of you holding the cake.  Cake is heavy and it’s just asking for trouble if you have a dark color cake with a white dress.  If you’re the Bride and you happen to drop the cake, how are you going to replace it on a moments notice?

Minnesota Stadium Celebration

For the third year – I was able to help my Client in Edina host another theatrical event.  This year’s play theme was the new Vikings stadium.  Though we didn’t have gold and purple décor, we did incorporate a vibrant colors with an edgy flare and some sequined linens.  The food was another amazing feast provided by Create Catering.  Less snow this year, but I know the temp was colder than last year.  Cheers to repeat Clients and the new Vikings stadium.

Jeanne & Rita: A Ladies celebration

After an intimate wedding ceremony at a labyrinth in the fall of 2013, Jeanne and Rita wanted to celebrate with all their family and friends.  Wanting to incorporate their love for labyrinths, they selected their church which has a labyrinth inlay design on the floor.  We used the various labyrinth designs on the cake and stationery items and placed a giant fabric one for guest to wander through.  Greens, moss and hints of pink defined the space for an outdoor garden/chic style reception.  I built and designed a maze for guests to enter through, mimicking a miniature labyrinth.  Working with these ladies was a complete joy as they were a great referral from a past couple of mine and direct referrals are the best!

A Broadway Celebration

For the second year, Sunrise Styling planned a celebration for our Client at his home in Edina, Minnesota.  The event had Jeffery Hatcher (playwright and screen writer) to produce a play and showcase the production during the evening.  With the help from the Children’s Theatre acting staff, additional guests from the event played small parts in the play… which was a twist on “Adam and Eve”.

Following the true art of Broadway – the linens and décor were as dazzling as the lights of Broadway.  Create Catering won over the guests with upscale food stations, butler passed hors d’oeuvres, and a fine selection of wine.  From the red carpet and Valet to the last morsel of dessert, all the guests raved about the gathering on a cold winter day.  We look forward to the next event at the Edina home with our team of VIP vendors.

It’s a BOY!

I love doing all types of events.  Check out this fabulous baby shower at the Create Dining Studio.  Guests enjoyed a lavish salad bar, fruit station, potato galette, grilled beef with aioli and bérnaise sauces, roasted spinach, and bar provided by Create Catering.  The Create Dining studio is a great place to host an event where the guests can enjoy seeing the Chef’s in action and talk directly with them about the menu.  I’m not fond of displaying the cake on a table and calling it a day.  Check out this custom cake bi-level cake stand with animal print fabric to match the theme and dual as a baby sock mobile.  Joining a love of baseball and animals, the cake was not only wonderful to look at, but delicious!  Not wanting the typical “baby blue” color palette for the décor… bold pinks, fuchsia, greens, and animal prints dressed the tables, thanks to Linen Effects and Sadie’s Floral.  The Mom to be, opened an overwhelming amount of gifts, thanks to generous family and friends.  Among those family members – the baby had two Great Grandmothers and both Grandmothers in attendance.  It’s not often children have Great Grandparents around… much less two of them.  Stay tuned in September for photos after the baby is born.
